We are taking action to support our employees and communities as the COVID-19 situation evolves. Our aim is to keep our operations running safely, and we are monitoring the situation closely.
The nature of our mine development projects is such that certain work cannot be done remotely, so our focus is on reducing the risk of the virus spreading to our projects. Operational continuity is critical for jobs, the communities around our operations, and the local economies. We will continue to adapt our response as this situation evolves, with our primary focus being the health and safety of our people.
The Trans Africa team is comprised of an extraordinary group of people. I have absolute confidence that working together we will meet these challenges and emerge stronger and more resilient than ever.
COVID-19 Response and Community Support (2022)
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, operations associated with Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) implemented a comprehensive support program aimed at protecting both employees and surrounding communities in Lualaba Province.
Key initiatives included:
• Contribution of medical supplies and protective equipment valued at over $800,000 to regional health authorities
• Installation of multiple public hand-washing stations across local communities
• Provision of continuous water supply systems to support hygiene measures
• Support for laboratory testing capacity, including PCR testing facilities
• Public awareness campaigns promoting health safety protocols and social distancing
• Distribution of protective masks and sanitation materials to nearby communities
Operational Health Measures
Following national health directives and the gradual easing of COVID-19 restrictions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, workforce operations at KCC resumed under controlled conditions. Strict preventive measures remain in place, including:
• Regular health screenings and testing programs
• Enforced use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Social distancing protocols within operational areas
• Enhanced hygiene practices, including frequent hand-washing
• Contact tracing procedures where necessary
International personnel are required to undergo mandatory quarantine protocols upon arrival, in line with company policy and national regulations.
Medical Preparedness and Response
A dedicated isolation and monitoring facility was established on-site to manage potential COVID-19 cases. Any individuals displaying symptoms are promptly isolated, tested, and provided with appropriate medical care.
Employees are only cleared to return to duty following full recovery and medical clearance, including an additional observation period as determined by on-site health professionals.
Ongoing Commitment
As the situation evolved, KCC’s medical and operational teams continuously reviewed and strengthened their health and safety protocols. Preventive measures were maintained at international best-practice standards, ensuring minimal risk of transmission within both the workforce and the surrounding communities.
